Purpose of the course:
This unit standard is for those people giving an induction of health and safety principles to new personnel and the person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the duties of both the employees and employers with regard to Occupational Safety and Health in the workplace.

It will also enable learners to apply basic health and safety legislation in the form of standards and procedures governing health and safety in the workplace, to ensure that they contribute to a safe, healthy environment for themselves and others.


SAQA unit standard aligned:
Unit standard 259639 Explain basic health and safety principles in and around the workplace.  NQF Level 2 is worth 4 credits.  

Unit standard 9964 Apply Health and Safety to a work area. NQF level 2 is worth 3 credits.
Course structure:
Module 1:
The duties of both the employer and employee with regard to occupational safety and health in the workplace
The Ohs representation structure and activities.
Explain the general safety rules in the workplace.
Supervision and interaction with employees
Normal health and safety responsibilities of managers or first-line supervisors
Medically and non-medically intoxication
Authorized access
Symbolic and other signage
Understanding and addressing non-conformances a the workplace
Understanding the process of behavioral-based safety
Identify potential hazards in the work area
Identified, removed, reduced, or reported.
Implications of exposure to hazardous substances and hazards
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the workplace.

Module 2:
Understanding danger, hazard, and risk
Safety Plan
Emergency Procedures
Procedure for reporting and recording illness or any emergency situation
What to do when the injury leads to a claim against a workman’s compensation.
Incident reporting and deadlines.
