Basic HSE Principles course: Basic HSE Principles

First of all, the Basic HSE Principles course is for those people giving an induction of health and safety principles to new personnel and the person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the duties of both the employees and employers with regard to Occupational Safety and Health in the workplace. Lastly, it will also enable learners to apply basic health and safety legislation in the form of standards and procedures governing health and safety in the workplace, to ensure that they contribute to a safe, healthy environment for themselves and others.

Unit standard 259639 Explain basic health and safety principles in and around the workplace.  NQF Level 2 is worth 4 credits.  

2. Apply basic H&S, unit standard 9964

Unit standard 9964 Apply Health and Safety to a work area. NQF level 2 is worth 3 credits.

Course structure:

Module 1 for Basic HSE Principles:

To start, both the employer and employee with regard to occupational safety and health in the workplace
The Ohs representation structure and activities.
Explain the general safety rules in the workplace.
Supervision and interaction with employees
Normal health and safety responsibilities of managers or first-line supervisors
Medically and non-medically intoxication
Authorized access
Symbolic and other signage
Understanding and addressing non-conformances a the workplace
Understanding the process of behavioral-based safety
Identify potential hazards in the work area
Identified, removed, reduced, or reported.
Implications of exposure to hazardous substances and hazards

Understanding danger, hazard, and risk

Procedure for reporting and recording illness or any emergency situation

Course Overview

This unit standard is for those people giving an induction of health and safety principles to new personnel and the person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the duties of both the employees and employers with regard to Occupational Safety and Heath in the workplace.

 

It will also enable learners to apply basic health and safety legislation in the form of standards and procedures governing health and safety in the workplace, to ensure that they contribute to a safe, healthy environment for themselves and others.

 

Learners will be able to understand the requirements that apply to persons entering the workplace and performing any duties therein as well as the requirements for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), housekeeping and emergency procedures that apply to the workplace.

 

The qualifying learner is capable of:

  • Explaining both employer and employee duties with regard to occupational safety and health in the workplace.
  • Explaining the general safety rules in a workplace.
  • Explaining the use and application of Personal Protective Equipment in a workplace.
  • Explaining the need for good housekeeping in the workplace.
  • Explaining and applying emergency procedures in the workplace.
